Cape May Court House, NJ – Cape May County Technical Schools’ (Cape Tech) new Marine Maintenance program received a generous donation from the Marine Trades Association of New Jersey (MTANJ), which will help the district provide opportunities for students to gain experience with these items through hands-on learning.

Brian Houf of Marine Equipment and Supply Co. and current MTANJ president presented Cape Tech Marine Maintenance Instructor Tracy Campbell with $3,000 worth of tools and products along with $2,000 worth of donations from the Derema Group, outdoor recreation marketing specialists who represent marine-related manufacturers such as Dometic, Tie Down, and Star brite.

Houf has been working as marine sales representative for the last 41 years, but his connection with Campbell spans back to when we worked at Campbell’s family marina. The two stayed in contact, and this led to the donation for the Cape Tech Marine Maintenance Program.

There are plenty of opportunities for students looking to get into mechanical fields. My son is in the union – so I've seen firsthand what the trades can do for our youth looking for a work opportunity after high school,” said Houf. “Those of us in the Marine Trades Association are huge supporters of getting students involved as early as possible – however we can help.”

A hydraulic press machine and toolbox were among the donated products, along with brake line kits, compression testers, and dozens of other brand-new items. The items will be integrated into the program’s curriculum and state-of-the-art facility. Having relevant, modern equipment and supplies to work with gives students practical knowledge they can apply in internships and beyond.

These types of donations really enhance the program,” said Campbell. “The students are motivated by seeing outside organizations having an active interest in the program, which gives them a lot of pride. Having the additional tools will allow students to be able to work in smaller groups - enhancing the overall learning experience.”

The Marine Maintenance program officially launched in September 2025. The program utilizes modern engine technology and test equipment to help enhance skills in the theory, maintenance, and troubleshooting of outboard and inboard marine engines; as well as learning about marine systems and trailer maintenance. Students in the program have access to waterfront facilities and an opportunity to gain Yamaha Service Skills Training credentials through a partnership with Yamaha Motor Sports. Cape Tech will connect students with paid and unpaid internship opportunities during their senior year at partner employers throughout the county.

Today’s students are tomorrow’s employees, business owners, business partners; supporting them now means supporting our future economy here in Cape May County,” said Cape Tech Superintendent Jamie Moscony. “We’re incredibly grateful for these types of donations. They’re helping grow programs that provide a strong foundation for successful graduates, in turn, creating students who are ready to jump right into the workforce. The investment in supporting these students has a major return.”

Cape Tech also received funding from the Securing Our Children’s Future Bond Act for facility upgrades, which will ensure the program continues to be competitive. The school is planning for a new boathouse and upgraded dock by the start of the 2026-2027 school year.
